The check, available from today (Fri), includes top-ups of tyre inflation, screen wash and checks on oil levels, headlights and brake lights, to help keep vital NHS workers moving at this critical time.

A survey of more than 1,000 nurses over the past 24 hours revealed 72 per cent rely on their vehicles to get to and from work, while 25 per cent said their car suffers from a number of defects.

The service is available to all NHS frontline staff at most Halfords retail stores or Autocentres from today.

To redeem the offer, which would normally cost £15,  NHS frontline workers will just need to show their NHS Staff ID card to any member of staff at Halfords or Halfords Autocentres.

Graham Stapleton, Halfords CEO, said: “Now more than ever workers in the NHS need our help and support.

“Our research shows how vital their cars are in getting to and from work, so we want to do our bit and help the extraordinary healthcare workers who are doing an incredibly trying job at the most difficult of times.”

In addition, motorists recovering at home and self-isolating because of COVID-19, can use Halfords’ garage on wheels services, Halfords Mobile Expert and Tyres On The Drive, where technicians can carry out car repairs and fittings outside their homes or on their drives without coming into contact with anyone.
